Acupuncture Point: Jia Cheng Jian (M-HN-28)
The mentalis muscle is part of a group of muscles that allow pouting, pulling up of the lips and chin.
A hyperactive, strained mentalis muscle can give the chin the appearance of a dimpled chin, or like an orange peel, and cause shadowing around the mouth in the expression of a frown, like in the painting American Gothic, by Grant Wood.
It doesn’t help that tension in the mentalis muscle also makes other lines around the mouth and jaw more pronounced.
Jia Cheng Jiang are a pair of points on the face that are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to eliminate wind, activate qi and blood and alleviate pain, and used to treat facial paralysis.
In a cosmetic rejuvenation treatment with me, these points can do all that, and are also used to relieve tension in the mentalis to reduce the pulling and dimpling of the skin. Synergistic and antagonistic muscles to the mentalis will also be needled if required to relax the whole face and lift the jaw and cheeks.
